Introduction from You Can Make Money Writing
Starting a business online really didn't excite me at all.
At the time we first considered it I typed with just two fingers
- and I still do! I didn't know what HTML was or how to use it.
I didn't even like computers or surfing the internet.
Despite my misgivings, we considered making money online because
my wife and I wanted to travel, and we didn't care for jobs much.
It was three years into our marriage, and we hadn't yet settled
on where we wanted to live, despite a two multi-week trips around
the country checking out various places. The little bit of research
we did suggested that with the right kind of websites we could
make money working anywhere. That was a nice thought, to say
the least.
At the end of summer in 2004 we put up a website on finding
cheap houses. It was based on our experience traveling the country
looking for a new hometown. Then I built a website on unusual
ways to make money. Our flea market business and other ventures
inspired this one. We made websites about poetry, brainpower
and backpacking - fortunately we have a lot of interests between
us. With Google ads on the sites, and links to affiliate products,
we were soon making... fifty cents daily.
We moved to Arizona in December, and I spent the first week
of 2005 putting up the website HowToRemoveCarpetStains.com. I
had worked as a carpet cleaner in the past, and in preparation
for the site I bought lunch for the owner of the company (my
brother) and took notes as I questioned him on stains of every
type. Working in our $380-per-month studio apartment, we built
the business up to a few dollars daily by the end of January.
Repairing a computer virus cost us all the income we made in
February.
In February, though, I discovered article marketing as a way
to promote our websites. I had always enjoyed writing, but never
I did it consistently enough to be a good writer or to make money
at it. That was about to change. I started cranking out articles
every day.
By the end of summer we had our first $1,000 month. By autumn
we were making a living. It started working because I was writing
and distributing simple articles on topics in which I had an
interest. The next summer we bought a nice home in Colorado.
We wanted to be in the mountains, and as we had hoped, we really
did get to live where we wanted with this kind of online business.
Though we found a way to make money and live where we want,
writing articles also made this business fun and something I
look forward to as I roll out of bed each morning. We travel
and I write about it to develop traffic for our travel website.
When I climbing the mountains around here or go hiking, it gives
me article material for my sites on hiking and backpacking. I
even have a little site that just has my wilder ideas on everything
from politics to inventions and philosophy - and it produces
a few hundred dollars each month.
I make money writing about things that interest me, and you
